Project description

The project will replace seasonally installed mobile or meridian barriers with permanent sturdy metal posts known as security bollards at the Dancing Fountain Plaza (Hyman Avenue and Mill Street), reinforcing the boundary between vehicles and the pedestrian area. The bollards are designed to prevent vehicles from entering the mall while allowing access for emergency responders. They will upgrade the temporary barriers with a more effective and visually appropriate solution that strengthens pedestrian safety while preserving the character of Aspen’s historic downtown core.

With approval from city council in 2025, the project is moving forward with design development, land-use application, Historic Preservation Commission review, and permitting. Neighboring businesses and the general public will be continually informed as the project progresses towards construction in the spring or fall off-season of 2027.

Timeline

  • Land use application submission - Summer 2026

  • Historic Preservation Commission review - Fall 2026

  • Permitting - Fall 2026

  • Construction documentation - Winter 2026/27

  • Construction - 2027
