The City of Aspen recycling and waste diversion programs play crucial roles that fulfill our Aspen values of reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) and conserving natural resources. Since 1993, the Rio Grande Recycle Center (RGRC), located next to Rio Grande Park, has provided an addition to curbside recycling, playing an important role in furthering local waste diversion efforts and extending the life of the local landfill. (Click to learn more about current recycling conditions and rules in Aspen.)

Though free to the public, the RGRC incurs expenses, and to date, Pitkin County Landfill fees have funded the RGRC. Due to recent Pitkin County rule changes, funding for all of the local recycling centers outside of the Pitkin County Solid Waste Center is being eliminated. The recycling center at the landfill will remain open and free to residents, but the County will not provide funding for the centers located in Aspen, Basalt, or Redstone.

After evaluating the estimated costs and considering the community's input, City Council has decided to change the system at the Rio Grande Recycle Center to Targeted Collections (beginning Saturday, August 31, 2019). For more detailed information, there are a variety or resources in the document center to the right.
