The City of Aspen has a long history of developing bicycle and pedestrian plans, some dating back to the 1970’s. These plans have helped define everything from the aesthetic of our sidewalks, to the extensive trail system throughout Aspen. The Engineering and Parks Department are currently working on an update of the 1991 plan.
The first phase of the new master planning process began in 2014 and continued into 2015 and involved an inventory of current conditions and public outreach for ideas for phase two. Together consultants, City staff, and the public came up with more than 100 potential improvement projects to the bike/ped system. These ideas were categorized and prioritized and whittled down to six top priorities. These six priorities are now the focus of phase two and include researching and implementing the following:
Identify appropriate locations and then create more bike parking downtown
Create a trail on 4th Street from Main St. to Music Tent
Explore the best ways to improve movement east/west through the downtown core
Add additional bicycle striping
Locate the top 5 sidewalk gaps
Research and install trial bicycle boulevard on Hallam or Francis in the West End that could become permanent
Like Phase I, public input is integral to success.
Please stay in touch with this page because we will be adding questions, maps and interactive tools in the coming weeks. For now, please take our quick poll.

In 2015, the City of Aspen
completed Phase I of the Master Plan, which resulted in over 100 proposed
recommendations to improve bicycle and pedestrian access in the city.
Phase II of this plan is focused on implementing recommendations from
Phase I. The input you provide within the online input map will help us to
determine what Phase I recommendations you want to see implemented. You
can also use the tool to 'Request-A-Rack', identifying areas where you
think a new bicycle rack should be installed in Aspen. Link here.
