The Lake Avenue Ped-Bike Living Lab project is designed to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and connectivity throughout Aspen. With no sidewalks in the West End, the Lake Avenue stretch is a key connector to Aspen’s downtown core and is a popular vehicular route out of town. This project prioritizes creating a safer environment for Aspen residents who travel by bicycle and by foot.

Like the existing pedestrian-bikeways on Hallam Street and Hopkins Street, the seven-block stretch of the Lake Avenue Ped-Bike Living Lab aims to install a new ped-bikeway consisting of sharrows and directional signage in the road. The Lake Avenue Ped-Bike Living Lab is not a traffic calming project. As part of the development of a comprehensive network of pedestrian and bike paths leading into town, this Living Lab seeks to create a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel throughout the Aspen downtown area, while simultaneously maintaining the historical aesthetic of Aspen.

Project Goals:

  • Improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, and connectivity.
  • Build neighborhood support and understanding.
  • Collect feedback from the Living Lab participants.
