For project background, please click on "Background Document" to the right under "Documents".

The overall project goal is to address site challenges (such as aging utilities and accessibility) and improve the function and experience of the Mall while maintaining the beloved character and historic aesthetic of the area. Project goals include:

  • Maintain historical integrity and character of the Mall while upgrading infrastructure and access.
  • Replacing aging utilities to serve customer needs for the next 50 years.
  • Explore innovative ways to improve the stormwater infrastructure systems to further protect the Roaring Fork watershed.
  • Retain the Malls as an urban park with a strong forestry program that promotes best practices for the continued health of the urban forest.
  • Increase Mall accessibility to meet modern code.
  • Engage the public and business owners to explore the best ways to enhance the Mall experience.

The first phase of the project began at the end of 2016 and involved an inventory and analysis of current conditions and extensive public outreach. Historical context paired with feedback on what makes the Mall successful, community priorities, project goals and design direction we compiled into a design criteria document. Design criteria provided the framework that the design team, Design Workshop, would use to develop the three conceptual design alternatives.

The three conceptual design alternatives, corresponding videos and a community survey are now posted to the project webpage: www.aspenpedestrianmall.com

Before completing the online community survey, please watch the four brief videos to have a tour of the three conceptual design alternatives. Each design has a different approach to various mall elements and the videos help to explain the nuances of each design.

Survey responses will be collected until 7 PM on December 22, 2017. These responses will be used to inform the overall direction of the preferred conceptual design.

    Springtime on the Mall

by Bryana, about 7 years ago

I love the mall because it is a calming yet vibrant space. My season on the mall is spring time when the flowers and trees are blooming and you can find a place to rest and people watch.

My family moved to Colorado from Kansas many years ago and when I was a child I remember one of our first family excursions was to visit the mall. We window shopped as we ate our ice cream cones and then we splashed around in the water fountain. It was a one of many great days on the mall.
